Sentenced to death at a sham trial of revolutionaries, Marie Antoinette delivered a blistering rebuke to the court, saying “I was a queen, and you took away my crown; a wife, and you killed my husband; a mother, and you deprived me of my children. My blood alone remains: take it, but do not make me suffer long.” Her fierce stoicism at her situation stayed with her until the end. When she was brought to the guillotine, Marie Antoinette behaved with great poise and composure. At one point, though, she accidentally stepped on the executioner’s foot. She told the man, “Monsieur, I ask your pardon. I did not do it on purpose.” With that said, she walked boldly forward and accepted her death.
