Giving the “dog’s advice” is a 12th century turn of phase for giving self-serving advice. It’s origin is from a once well-known proverb in which a husband and wife are debating which piece of meat to use for the stew. The wife says the side, but the husband says the joint. The dog sneaks up and whispers in the man’s ear: “You’re the man here of this house, you should overrule your wife and get your way”, knowing full well that if the husband gets his way and the joint goes in the stew, there will be a tasty bone for the dog when dinner is done.
