Demosthenes was one of the greatest orators of his time, using his profound rhetorical skill to steer the course of ancient Athens, one debate at a time. But it was not always so. When Demosthenes entered politics, his first attempts at public speaking were not well received. Weak-voiced, rambling, and showing visible nerves, he was at one time laughed out of the assembly. But Demosthenes wasn’t the kind of guy to be easily discouraged. Instead, he realized that he needed to totally transform his speaking ability. He started by shaving off half his hair, giving himself a hairstyle so hideous that he wouldn’t be tempted to go and speak until his training was done. During the ensuing months, he engaged in all kinds of exercise to strengthen his speaking style. For instance, to give his voice power and authority, he would recite poetry during his daily runs through Athens. Another problem with his speaking style was that he tended to speak to quick and stammer when he got excited. To make his speaking more slow and deliberate, he practiced speaking with pebbles in his mouth. By virtue of his rigorous exercises, Demosthenes’ return to politics was a complete success, and he went on to forge a legacy that would stand the test of time.
